Forestry mulching in progress — our Cat 265 with HM316 mulcher head in Franklin, TN.
What's Involved
Forestry Mulching, Done Right
Forestry mulching is the efficient way to clear underbrush, saplings, and small trees without the cost and disturbance of hauling everything off. A mulching head mounted on an excavator or skid steer grinds vegetation in place, leaving a layer of natural mulch that protects the soil and suppresses regrowth.
Because there's no burning and nothing to haul, it's often faster and cleaner than traditional clearing — and it leaves the ground ready to use. It's ideal for thinning wooded lots, clearing trails, reclaiming pasture, and managing overgrowth along fence lines.
If you want the land opened up without tearing up the topsoil, mulching is usually the smart call. We'll tell you honestly whether mulching or full clearing fits your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions
It's a clearing method where a rotating mulching head grinds trees and brush into mulch right where they stand. The mulch stays on the ground as a protective, regrowth-suppressing layer.
Traditional clearing knocks everything down and hauls or burns it, often disturbing the soil. Mulching grinds vegetation in place with minimal ground disturbance and no debris to remove.
Light underbrush can run $1,750–$2,500 per acre; heavy growth with larger trees runs higher. We quote per acre after seeing the density.
It depends on the machine, but we routinely mulch brush and trees up to several inches in diameter. Larger trees may be removed separately first.
No. The mulch is a benefit — it controls erosion, retains moisture, and slows regrowth. It breaks down naturally over time.
Yes. Selective mulching is great for opening up a wooded property while keeping the trees you want.
The mulch layer slows regrowth, but persistent species can return. For permanent clearing with root removal, full land clearing is the better option.
Absolutely — trails, fence lines, and right-of-way mulching are common jobs.
